Situated on First Nations Territory

The name comes from a Hul’q’umi’num’ word meaning “warm country” or “land warmed by the sun”. Originally both Cowichan Lake and settlement were known simply as Kaatza, for “big lake”. The band is part of the Salishan linguistic group. The Lake Cowichan First Nation, while its own distinct group, is closely linked to the peoples of the Cowichan Tribes band government.
